Ctrl Room

Rooms, messages and threads

Rooms

  • Text rooms are for chat. Each can have a topic shown in the header.
  • Announcement rooms (megaphone icon) let only mods and up start new posts. Everyone can still reply in threads.
  • Voice rooms open a call bar when you walk in. They also have text chat.

Admins add rooms in Settings → Rooms: give it a name, choose Text or Voice, and optionally make it announcements only. Deleting a room deletes all its messages.

Room info and editing

Click the room name in the header (or the info button) to see the room's topic, description and who can start posts. Links in the description are clickable.

Owners and admins can Edit room from the header or from Settings → Rooms: change the name, icon, topic, description (up to 1,000 characters), Text or Voice, and who can start posts. The room's link never changes. The icon shows next to the room in the sidebar, the header and the room info; pick one from the grid (search by name) or choose Default for # (or a speaker for voice rooms). When you add a room in Settings → Rooms, Ctrl Room suggests an icon from its name (for example announcements, dev or memes); change it before you save if you like. Use the arrows in Settings → Rooms to change the order.

Sections

Owners and admins can group rooms under headings in Settings → Rooms → Sections: add, rename, reorder and delete sections, and move rooms between them. Deleting a section keeps its rooms. In the sidebar, click a section's name to collapse it; this is remembered in your browser. Admins can also rename a section or add a room to it from the … next to its name.

Pin rooms

Pin a room with the pin button next to it in the sidebar, in the header, or in the room info. Pinned rooms show under Pinned at the top of the room list, in the order you pinned them. Pins are just for you, and you can pin up to 20 rooms per community.

Send a message

  • Enter sends. Shift+Enter adds a new line.
  • Type @ and a few letters to mention someone. Pick a name with the arrow keys and Enter or Tab.
  • Links become clickable. Wrap text in backticks for code, or three backticks for a code block.
  • Messages can be up to 4,000 characters.

React, edit, delete

Hover a message to see its tools:

  • React with 👍 ❤️ 😂 🔥 👀 ✅. Click a reaction again to remove yours.
  • Edit your own messages. Enter saves, Esc cancels. Edited messages show "(edited)".
  • Delete your own messages. Mods can delete messages from people ranked below them. Deleted messages show as "Message removed".
  • Pin to board saves the message to the room board.

Threads

Choose Reply in thread to open a thread next to the room. Threads are one level deep: replies to a reply stay in the same thread. The original message shows how many replies it has.

When a thread is settled, the person who started it (or a mod) can choose Close with an outcome and write what was decided. The outcome shows under the original message in the room, and can be pinned to the room board as a decision. Closed threads can be reopened.
